My wonderful week of 2021 Boardgame themed nights
What a great birthday week! After having a very toned down 2020 Birthday during the beginning of "These challenging times" as so many call them, Melissa treated me to a WONDERFUL week of 7 experiences!
Each experience was paired with a challenge to guess the theme/game based on thematic music picked out by Melissa. For example, the first night began with me hearing the Lava song from the short Disney video that preceded Moana. This was one of many songs that indicated Survive, Escape from Atlantis! (Technically the 5 to 6 player expansion that introduces giant squid!)
She brought out her stuffed Whale pillow, a themed Lava decoration, A pineapple and cocoanut for the theme, actual pineapple to eat, and fish-themed cut-out grilled cheese paired with tomato soup with pumpernickel bread for the volcano in the water... There was even a boat for us to assemble, and we each had a velvet whale to color!
The second night of boardgame-themed entertainment was based on One Deck Dungeon - Forest of Shadows. This has SERIOUSLY caught on as a favorite game of ours, from such a small box! The theme here was medieval with Renassaince Fair and Irish songs, etc - A dragon, various decor pictured below, with food and drink being chicken pot pies and Coke Zero with Fireball. Did I mention we love the game and have now played it countless times? :)
Day 3 was a great Space themed day with songs such as Ground Control to Major Tom among others.
The decor below is fantastic - the cheeseball planet was excellent in presentation and mouthfeel :D ("Mouthfeel" is a word I like to mock when Mel watches foodie videos on Youtube and Facebook :)
The space-themed cups and star-shaped grilled cheese were spot on. The alien-egg boiled eggs were a nice touch! The game was a Survive Alien-related version of the Escape from Atlantis game with great new rules and themes.
On my Actual Birthday, a Wingspan Oceania expansion that I was looking forward to! This was paired with an activity for building a bird house, 3 great birds that now on our mantle, and great themed music by bird named artists :) That was harder for me to guess :)
Next up is Parks - A GREAT National Park themed game that delivers the experience of exploring as many National Parks as you can in a great year of adventure! Great theme, and Great Game! Jurassic Park Themed music introduced it along with MacAurthur Park, among others. The theme of this revolved around things you would eat camping in a park! This is my 2nd favorite theme behind the Survive Escape from Atlantis day, possibly tied with Space!
The last theme was all Doom and Gloom, with the 2nd appearance of my great Skull! :) The game (of course?) is Gloomhaven - or a 2 player introduction to it called Jaws of the Lion! By the way, be sure to check out the fantastic Sloth-Lion below! I can't wait to try this game, but it will take more time than the others! The animal cracker Lions on a "Log" were a nice touch also! Jawbreakers included fyi.
Another day this birthday week, we had Codenames Duet, paired with James Bond and spy-themed music. The dinner itself was pizza - a very question marked and footprinted pizza of spy theme :) Bonus olives - included
